The Neutrino: A Particle Ahead of Its Time – Inquiro – Journal of Undergrad Research [1]
Throughout school and in any physics class, students are told that nothing travels faster than the speed of light. However, that statement might no longer be true because of the neutrino—the particle that may be able to transcend dimensions that light cannot
Everyone has heard of electrons, protons, and neutrons, but what exactly is a neutrino? A neutrino is an exponentially small particle with no electrical charge. To put the remarkably small size of a neutrino into perspective, consider that neutrinos are thought to be a million times smaller than electrons, which have a mass of 9.11 × 10-31 kilograms2
Because neutrinos are so common, their mass, which remains unknown, is thought to have an effect on the gravity of the universe1. Neutrinos can pass through almost anything, and they do so constantly
Hunting for Neutrinos: When the Ordinary Is Unexpected [2]
Except in horror movies, most scientific experiments don’t start with scientists snooping around narrow, deserted hallways. But a tucked-away location in the recesses of the Department of Energy’s (DOE) Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) provided exactly what Yuri Efremenko was looking for.
The team uses five particle detectors to identify a specific interaction between neutrinos and atomic nuclei. The most abundant particles in the universe, neutrinos are extremely light and have no electric charge
Needless to say, they’re notoriously difficult to detect.. At first, the team surveyed a bustling area near the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS), a DOE Office of Science user facility at ORNL in Tennessee
[Solved] Consider the following statements about neutrinos 1. Neutri [3]
Neutrinos are charge less elementary particles that travel close to the speed of light.. Neutrinos are created in nuclear reactions of beta decay.

Falsifiability [9]
Falsifiability is a deductive standard of evaluation of scientific theories and hypotheses, introduced by the philosopher of science Karl Popper in his book The Logic of Scientific Discovery (1934).[B] A theory or hypothesis is falsifiable (or refutable) if it can be logically contradicted by an empirical test.. Popper proposed falsifiability as the cornerstone solution to both the problem of induction and the problem of demarcation
Popper contrasted falsifiability to the intuitively similar concept of verifiability that was then current in logical positivism. His argument goes that the only way to verify a claim such as “All swans are white” would be if one could theoretically observe all swans,[F] which is not possible
On the other hand, the Duhem–Quine thesis says that definitive experimental falsifications are impossible[1] and that no scientific hypothesis is by itself capable of making predictions, because an empirical test of the hypothesis requires one or more background assumptions.[2]. According to Popper there is a clean asymmetry on the logical side[G] and falsifiability does not have the Duhem problem[H] because it is a logical criterion
Solving the mystery of the missing neutrinos [10]
The three years 2001 to 2003 were the golden years of solar neutrino research. In this period, scientists solved a mystery with which they had been struggling for four decades
In this article, I tell the story of those fabulous three years.1. The first two sections summarize the solar neutrino mystery and present the solution that was found in the past three years
The following sections outline what is left to do in solar neutrino research and give my personal view of why it took more than thirty years to solve the mystery of the missing neutrinos. The last section provides a retrospective impression of the solution.
Neutrinos may still have broken light barrier – or not [11]
GENEVA (Reuters) – Neutrinos which appeared to have undermined a basic law of the universe by exceeding the speed of light might have done so even faster than first thought – or might not have done it at all, physicists in Italy said on Thursday.. The scientists at the Gran Sasso laboratory said tests on the equipment used in their experiment had led to two question marks over its sensational results, because of problems with possibly faulty cabling and separately with a timing mechanism.
The latest turn in the story, which set the scientific world in uproar when it first broke last September, left the basic question – did they or didn’t they? – unanswered, with more tests set for the coming weeks and months.. In an interview with Reuters, CERN director general Rolf Heuer said the lack of certainty was normal.
“They have continued to check and check and check, and now they have found these two possible effects, one going in one direction and the other going in another,” said the CERN chief. Most scientists had been sceptical about the original measurements, which flew in the face of Albert Einstein’s 1905 Special Theory of Relativity which asserts that nothing in the universe can travel faster than light and underpins much of modern physics and cosmology.
